Artist's Description
If I were permitted to paint only one painting in my life It would be this one. Attention to the hands must be given. The figure at bottom center has a reversed clenched fist, she blows through her lips as if to help the wind dispatch the ship to other places. The elder figure at far right rolls her thumb and finger together in contemplation of what she has achieved, the central figure waves good-bye with an invisible hand. There is a hint of a tear on her cheek.Red sky in the morning ("Sailors take warning" )Is set in a time long ago to display how the warnings were present a long time ago. The castle represents the home. The ship setting to sea in uncertain weather is in metaphor of how fragile our lives are. Setting sail in a storm is filled with risk.Sometimes family members are lost in angry seas never to return home.

Very nice Steven. Your area is rich in maritime history. Have you painted any of the old sailing and trading schooners that plied the northwest coast? I'm from a fishing family in Gloucester, Ma and kind of specialize in that type of painting.
